Nokia Siemens announced an energy-efficient mobile network equipment package, the first announcement of more to come that show a commitment to improving the energy consumption of its network gear, the company said. The package includes software that can reduce the energy used by base stations by setting some components to enter a power-saving mode at night, a time when network traffic dramatically decreases.Another feature changes the minimum temperature requirement for a base station. While base stations are typically stored indoors where the air is cooled to around 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit) Nokia Siemens found that increasing the temperature to closer to 40 degrees Celsius can reduce energy consumption at the site by as much as 30 percent.Nokia Siemens' energy-efficient package also includes network-planning tools that can allow operators to use fewer base stations, which would also save on energy costs. The company plans to reduce the energy consumption of its base stations from 800 watts for GSM (Global Systems for Mobile Communications) today to 650W and from 500W for WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) to 300W by 2010.The base-station energy-savings initiative is the first of others to come from the company, which said that it is committed to improving the environmental impact of telecommunications infrastructure. The move is better for the environment but also saves money for operators, Nokia Siemens said.In addition, lower energy use can make telecommunication infrastructure more attractive in emerging markets without an extensive electric grid. Nokia Siemens isn't alone in targeting these regions. For example, Motorola earlier this year said it would test sun and wind-powered base stations in Namibia. Siemens, before its merger with Nokia, supplied solar-powered base stations in Malawi. |

China's largest mobile phone network operator will have a 3G network based on TD-SCDMA technology up and running in eight cities by the end of this year, in preparation for testing ahead of the Summer Olympic Games slated to start next August in Beijing, industry leaders say.Network equipment maker ZTE has already started delivering systems to service provider China Mobile Communications, a ZTE manager said at the GSMA Mobile Asia Congress, which started Monday in Macau, China.Earlier this year, the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG), had said it did not expect TD-SCDMA (Time Division Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) to be part of the technology offerings on hand at the Games because it wasn't ready yet. But the group has changed its tune.News reporters, athletes, and attendees will all be able to take advantage of 3G telecommunications at the Olympics, said Susan Li, deputy division chief in the technology department's telecommunication division at BOCOG."This is no easy task," she said, "considering the Olympic Games are spread through 31 venues, including several outside of Beijing."BOCOG had already partnered with China Mobile to provide GSM and WLAN services at Olympic buildings and venues. But now China Mobile has committed to providing 3G services at the Games, she said."We are very happy with the development of TD-SCDMA and that it will be showcased at the Olympic Games," Li added.TD-SCDMA has been a question mark for a while. The main knock against the 3G standard is that it's a latecomer, rushed to market by government officials in China and perhaps not yet ready to handle the huge crowds and spotlight of the Olympics. China could have chosen the existing 3G standard used in many other countries, WCDMA (Wideband Code-Division Multiple Access), instead of spending money on its own 3G mobile standard, but the nation wants to promote home grown technologies. When China might issue 3G mobile telecommunications licenses remains unknown; 3G licensing has been a question mark in China for a while, and executives at the show blamed the rush to finish readying TD-SCDMA technology and careful testing of the new standard for the delay.Hua Yang, secretary-general of the TD-SCDMA Industry Alliance, said 100 pieces of networking equipment are already ready for commercial TD-SCDMA use, and that handsets armed with HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) mobile broadband Internet capability will be ready in the first quarter of next year.Aside from Beijing, 3G trials will also be held in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Xiamen, Shanghai, Qingdao, and Baodin, he said.Networking equipment maker Datang Mobile has been troubleshooting certain Olympic venues. In Qingdao, where all Olympic sailing events will be held, the company is trying out TD-SCDMA systems able to provide 3G service coverage over the sea, said Xu Tiezhu, general manager of Datang's Beijing R&D Center. The company is also running tests on Shanghai's Maglev Train and in subways in some cities, to ensure 3G coverage."All corporations will work together to ensure the Olympic Games are a success," said Yang.Executives at the meeting said trials will continue from now through the first half of 2008, with commercial runs of the TD-SCDMA-based 3G networks taking place in 10 cities in a run-up to the Olympic Games. The Opening ceremony of the Games takes place on Aug. 8, 2008, and events run through Aug. 24, according to BOCOG's Web site. |

Now that WiMax has been certified as a form of 3G mobile data infrastructure, Sprint Nextel is changing its tune about the WiMax network it plans to launch commercially in April.Last year when Sprint was shopping around for a "4G" technology, it had a lot to say about how 4G would do something 3G networks couldn't. WiMax won out as its 4G network of choice. But in a keynote address Thursday at CTIA Wireless I.T. & Entertainment in San Francisco, an executive of Sprint's WiMax business, Xohm, sang a different tune."I think we spend entirely too much time talking about the Gs," said Atish Gude, senior vice president of mobile broadband operations at Sprint. Last week, the Radiocommunication Sector of the International Telecommunication Union certified WiMax as a 3G technology, providing a seal of approval many governments require for carriers to deploy it. Wider deployment generally means lower equipment prices, which helps service providers. That's not to say the carrier no longer wants to differentiate WiMax. In his presentation, Gude played up the wide band of spectrum Xohm will be able to use, which he said will cut down on delays for individual users the same way a multilane freeway can move faster than a two-lane highway even when the speed limit is the same. In the real world, a lot of people want to use the network at the same time, he said. But more important is the business model of the two networks, Gude said, characterizing the traditional cellular business as more closed and controlled, while Xohm's business will tap into the dynamics of the open Internet. The company is opening itself up to partners for application development as well as connected devices, he said. The best known of these deals, announced in July, was an agreement with Google to develop a variety of Internet-based services.Sprint hopes a wide range of devices, including cameras, media players, and in-car electronics, ultimately will connect to the WiMax network. Instead of Sprint stores, they will be sold in the most logical places for their device types, such as consumer electronics stores. The first devices to come for Xohm next year will be wireless cards for notebook PCs, which Gude expects to be sold in the computer departments of electronics stores. The company will also have open API for third parties to develop services to run on the network. As an example, Gude envisioned a video portal that users could navigate using the five buttons traditionally found on video players. Xohm will probably charge for some of what it offers to third parties, but its aim is not to stifle innovation, he said.Sprint isn't getting out of its cellular business now that it's starting Xohm -- which it expects to reach 100 million U.S. residents by the end of 2008 -- but seems to be looking at it in a different light now."We are a content distribution industry," Gude said. It's just that for most of cellular's history, all the content has been user-generated and consisted of talking. |
